Don't panic!!! The amount due includes interest thru tomorrow. If the payment is not made by then a new calculation must be made, and another nastygram will be computer generated.

Rather than pay a ridiculous "convenience fee" to use a credit card, call IRS on Monday (800-829-1040) and ask them to calc the total payment due through, say Friday, if that allows enough time to get to IRS from your location.

If you go this route, the next nastygram may already be on its way, so when you get it, again DON'T PANIC!!. Just call IRS %26amp; verify that they received the payment.

Use a personal check NOT a certified or money order. If there is an issue of misapplied payment it is so much easier to get a copy of the check from your own account than from the issuer of the money order or certified check, not to mention finding the odd receipt. ( In my experience all that matters is that the check be valid. They'll negotiate it even if it's made out to someone else!!!)

This is crucial:ALWAYS write your name SSN, the year and form (ie 2005 form 1040) on th4e check, to make clear your intention. If you do not do so and you owe for another period, they will apply it to the earlier period. Moreover, never mix 2 differnet payments on a single check.

A convenience fee is charged, but you can make the payment up to midnight Monday night and still be on time.

Reply:I have been a tax accountant for 27 years and an American for much longer than that. Never fall in to the electronic-age trap. As a specialist in IRS tax collection procedures, I can tell you that it is a very bad idea to pay your taxes by personal check, let alone electronic debit. I always counsel my clients to pay IRS by certified check or postal money order.

You may pay a little interest now, but be much richer in the long run if you heed my advice.
Reply:You can pay your taxes by phone.

Pay by Credit Card 鈥?Taxpayers can charge taxes on their American Express, MasterCard, Visa or Discover cards. To pay by credit card, taxpayers should contact one of the service providers at its telephone number or Web site listed below and follow the instructions. The service providers charge a convenience fee based on the amount of tax the taxpayer is paying. Taxpayers should not add the convenience fee to their tax payment.
